SUMMARY:Pat O’Connor: Reclaimed
DESCRIPTION:Pat O’Connor\, “Orange Skies Day\, 9/9/2020\,” 2026\, 61
 ″ x 92″\, photo Jeanne O’Connor Pat O’Connor’s work has long exp
lored the intersection of object\, time\, and narrative. Beginning with pa
per pulp castings over structures at a former World War II naval base\, O
Connor developed a sustained interest in materials marked by history. In
her exhibit\, Reclaimed\, she is drawn to surfaces shaped by wear\, weath
er\, and works with cardboard salvaged from the streets\, recycling bins\,
  and packaging. Through folding\, layering\, stitching\, printing\, and pa
inting\, she transforms these fragments and other seemingly incongruent ma
terials into richly layered assemblages. Guided by shifts in patina and fo
rm\, O’Connor builds surfaces dense with histories\, lush harmonies\, an
d active surfaces. Cardboard\, humble and impermanent\, originates from tr
ees. O’Connor links the material back to the natural world. In some work
s\, she introduces imagery of branches and tree forms\, creating both calm
and unsettling dialogues between the material’s fragile present and its
living origin. In a culture shaped by disposability\, O’Connor elevates
overlooked materials\, inviting viewers to sense the stories embedded in
ordinary things as well as imagine ways the industrial and natural worlds
might endure together. Bio: Pat O’Connor is an artist whose practice spa
 ns drawing\, painting\, assemblage\, and site-responsive sculpture. Her wo
rk has been exhibited widely\, most recently at the de Young Museum in San
Francisco\, Transmission Gallery in Oakland\, the Sasse Museum of Art in
Pomona\, California\, and O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley. H
er pieces are held in public and private collections\, including a public
commission at the University of California\, San Francisco Medical Center.
Pat received her BA in Painting and Drawing from UC Davis and pursued gra
duate study in textile arts at San Francisco State University. Honors incl
ude a San Francisco Foundation Grant\, the Robert Rauschenberg-hosted Powe
r of Art Award from the Lab School of Washington\, D.C.\, and the Arts Edu
cator of the Year Award from the San Francisco Unified School District. O
Connor has taught widely at notable institutions\, including San Francis

SUMMARY:Rotating Bands at the Lion’s Den
DESCRIPTION:Experience the resurgence of San Francisco’s historic Chinat
own nightlife at the Lion’s Den.  Tucked away on Wentworth Place\, this
bi-level lounge and performance space blends modern cocktail culture with
the East meets West spirit of the Chinatown’s golden age. Every week\,
the venue transforms into a unique destination for live music\, featuring
a rotating roster of the city’s up and coming funk\, soul\, and R&B ense
mbles. The Sound: From 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM\, the stage belongs to a curate
d selection of live bands. The rotation frequently features bands such as
Mark Maiden\, Funky Sound Experience\, Jay Neal\, The Groove Foundation\,
Baycoin Beats\, and Git With It. Whether it’s deep-pocket funk or smooth
contemporary soul\, the music is designed to bridge the gap between a sop
histicated lounge set and a packed dance floor. The Atmosphere: The design
features plush velvet banquettes\, historic photography\, and dim\, moody
lighting. It is a space built for “adult” nightlife—where you can e
njoy an Asian-inspired craft cocktail during the live set before the room
transitions to a high-energy DJ vibe after 11:00 PM. The Experience: The L
ion’s Den is a rare “no cover” gem in the heart of the city\, offeri
ng world-class musicianship in an intimate\, stylish setting. It is a plac
e to rediscover the “cool” of Chinatown while supporting the next gene
ration of San Francisco’s musical talent. A Legacy Reclaimed The Lion’
s Den occupies a legendary footprint in San Francisco history. In the 1940
s and 50s\, Chinatown was a global nightlife epicenter\, home to iconic cl
ubs like the Forbidden City. The current venue at 57 Wentworth Place was o
nce the site of Dragon A Go Go\, a 1960s hotspot that kept the neighborhoo
d buzzing during the height of the San Francisco counterculture. After dec
ades of relative quiet due to changing zoning laws\, the reopening of The
Lion’s Den in 2021 marked the first new nightclub to open in Chinatown i
 n nearly 40 years. Today\, it stands as a cultural bridge\, honoring the g
lamour of the “Harlem of the West” era while providing a vital modern
stage for Asian-American artists and the local creative community.

SUMMARY:Gaucho Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area band that combines the influenc
e of gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective
improvisation of New Orleans swing music\, gutbucket blues and elements of
ragtime. Their sound\, a uniquely American concoction\, blends instrument
al acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for
more. As founder\, guitarist\, and main composer Dave Ricketts says\, the
band is “in love with the music of Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller and Jim
mie Rodgers\, as well as the stories\, the life styles and the foot steps
of hundreds of other great jazz\, blues\, country and rock musicians that
created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950’s” Gaucho h
as recorded eight albums\, tours regularly\, and has an increasing reperto
ire of over forty original tunes. Seven of their tunes are featured in the
2012 film “Trattoria”\; one was chosen by the Metropolitan Museum of
Art for their website\; and another is featured in the outtakes section of
the Pixar DVD CARS 2. In 2018\, Gaucho got a song in the Hollywood Movie
“Destination Wedding” starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. And two
of Dave’s own compositions will be placed in a New York City based indie
film\, “Stationed at Home\,” in 2022. Led by eminent guitarist\, Dave
Ricketts\, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly twenty
years\, and one of the busiest bands in the bay area playing 5 to 10 gigs
a week. Together with virtuosos Rob Reich–accordion and Craig Venetresco
–guitar\, superlative bassist Ari Munkres\, the honorable Leon Oakley–
cornet\, and versatile percussionist Steve Apple\, these guys keep crowds
moving with their beats and complex rhythms.

SUMMARY:INVENTION OF SOLITUDE BOOK CLUB: REAL LIFE
DESCRIPTION:Join us this this month for the Invention of Solitude Fiction
Book Club. This month we will be discussing Real Life by Brandon Taylor.&q
uot\;Real Life&quot\; is a debut novel by Brandon Taylor that explores the
complexities of identity\, race\, and personal trauma through the experie

 Thrillist\, Vice\, Self\, Electric Literature\, and Shelf Awareness A nove
l of startling intimacy\, violence\, and mercy among friends in a Midweste
rn university town\, from an electric new voice. Almost everything about W
allace is at odds with the Midwestern university town where he is working
uneasily toward a biochem degree. An introverted young man from Alabama\,
black and queer\, he has left behind his family without escaping the long
shadows of his childhood. For reasons of self-preservation\, Wallace has e
nforced a wary distance even within his own circle of friends—some datin
g each other\, some dating women\, some feigning straightness. But over th
 e course of a late-summer weekend\, a series of confrontations with collea
gues\, and an unexpected encounter with an ostensibly straight\, white cla
ssmate\, conspire to fracture his defenses while exposing long-hidden curr
ents of hostility and desire within their community. Real Life is a novel
of profound and lacerating power\, a story that asks if it’s ever really
possible to overcome our private wounds\, and at what cost

DESCRIPTION:“Tide Tables” is a special series presented in collaborati

ns about the Bay water\, climate\, and food systems. Up first\, the Wild O
yster Project will be paired with experimental ambient vocalist Roco Córd
ova. The Wild Oyster Project aims to bring native oysters back to San Fran
cisco Bay through shell recycling\, community engagement and restoration i
nitiatives. They imagine a swimmable\, edible Bay using the power of oyst
ers. Roco Córdova is a composer\, improviser\, and vocalist\, who was bor
n in San Juan\, Puerto Rico. Córdova's work fuses diverse influences with
  electronic media\, chance operations\, gradual processes\, noise\, improv
isation\, and timbral techniques of composition.

SUMMARY:One Village\, One Book
DESCRIPTION:Our book club meets monthly at the library to discuss books se
t in Oakland and the Bay Area or by Bay Area authors. We select our books
from a variety of genres and eras so you’re sure to find something yo
u’re interested in. We’ll get to learn more about our city\, mee
t some neighbors and discuss what we’ve read. This year we’re mo
stly alternating fiction and non-fiction books. Meetings are the first Tue
sday of the month (note the change from 2025!) from 6:30-7:30pm. Come to o
ne discussion\, a few or all of them! No pre-registration or commitment is
required – all we ask is that you’ve read at least some of the
book and are ready to discuss it. Here’s our 2026 schedule: (Quoted d
escriptions are from the library catalog unless otherwise noted.) January
6\, 2026: Sourdough by Robin Sloan (fiction)We’re kicking off the
year with a quick read about the very Bay Area intersection of tech and fo
od culture. Lois is an exhausted software engineer who is gifted a very sp
ecial sourdough starter by her favorite bakers when they must flee the cou
ntry. Pretty soon she’s part of a mysterious underground food scene a
t the former Alameda Naval Air Station. February 3\, 2026: Family Style:
Memories of An American From Vietnam by Thien Pham (graphic memoir)The b
ook that got the most votes from our members on our year-end poll! “T
old through the lens of meaningful food and meals\, this graphic novel chr
onicles the author’s childhood immigration to America\, where food ta
kes on new meaning as he and his family search for belonging\, for happine
ss and for the American dream.” Pham is a graphic novelist\, comic ar
tist and educator based in Oakland. March 3\, 2026: Deep Care: The Radica
l Activists Who Provided Abortions\, Defied the Law\, and Fought to Keep C
linics Open by Angela Hume (non-fiction)“The story of the radical f
eminist networks who worked outside the law to defend abortion. Deep Care
follows generations of activists and clinicians who orbited the Womenâ
™s Choice clinic in Oakland from the early 1970s until 2010\, as they wo
rked underground and above ground\, in small cells and broad coalitions an
d across political movements with grit\, conviction\, and allegiances of g
reat trust to do what they believed needed to be done–despite the law
\, when required.” April 7\, 2026: Moonglow by Michael Chabon (fic
tion)“A man bears witness to his grandfather’s deathbed confessi
ons\, which reveal his family’s long-buried history and his involveme
nt in a mail-order novelty company\, World War II and the space program.â
€ Most of it isn’t set in Oakland\, but it is the only book on thi
s list that specifically mentions Montclair Library! May 5\, 2026: Automa
tic Noodle by Annalee Newitz (science fiction)Our May read is a slim 163
pages\, but packed with interesting ideas. This book is super popular as
of December 2025\, so you might want to get your hold in early. “In t
his semicozy tale set in a dystopian near future\, robots open their own r
estaurant\, build an unusual found family and achieve personal growth. A f
ew years after the war that led to California’s secession from the Un
ited States\, four robots awake in the flooded San Francisco takeout place
where they were contracted to work.” (Kirkus) “Emboldened by ne
wly granted civil rights from the California government\, the bots reboot
their lives in classic Bay Area form: by opening a noodle shop…In man
 y ways\, Newitz’s near-future San Francisco resembles today’s ci
ty\, with not-so-subtle nods to AI anxieties\, queer identity and the mode
rn-day immigrant experience. It is\, in the words of KQED’s Alexis Ma
drigal\, ‘The most San Francisco book that has ever been or could eve
r have been written.’” (Leah Worthington) (Ebook listed separate
ly) June 2\, 2026: Moneyball by Michael Lewis (non-fiction)Baseball sea
son is in full swing\, which makes this the perfect time to read Michael L
ewis’s nuanced exploration of “how Billy Beene\, the general man
ager of the Oakland Athletics\, used a new kind of thinking to build a suc
cessful and winning baseball team without spending enormous sums of money.
” July 7\, 2026: Girls Girls Girls by Shoshana von Blanckensee (fi
ction)In the summer of 1996\, best friends (and secret girlfriends)\, Hann
ah and Sam drive from “New York\, to the fabled queer paradise of San
Francisco\, free from the harsh gazes of their neighbors and the stifling
demands of Hannah’s devout Orthodox Jewish mother. In San Francisco\
, they will finally be together as a real couple\, out in the open\, aroun
d other queer people.” But soon they’re working at a strip club\
, meeting new people and trying to figure out who just they are. August 4\
, 2026: Power Hungry: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer
and Their Fight to Feed a Movement by Suzanne Cope (non-fiction)Journey
back with us to the summer of 1969 with the story of the free breakfast m
ovement\, grocery giveaways and other nurturing mutual aid programs starte
d by the Black Panthers. “NYU writing professor Cope rescues two fema
le activists from obscurity in this intriguing look at the role that food
played in the civil rights and Black Power movements.” If you read O
ne Crazy Summer with us in 2025\, you’ll enjoy learning the backstor
y to the Panthers’ food program. September 1\, 2026: Kasher in the R
ye by Moshe Kasher (memoir)Go back to school with this “hilarious m
emoir about the absurdity of addiction.” “When he was a young bo
y\, Kasher’s mother took him on a vacation to the West Coast. Well it
was more like an abduction…They moved to Oakland\, California. That
€™s where the real fun begins\, in the war zone of Oakland Public Schoo
ls. Those early years read like part Augusten Burroughs\, part David Sedar
 is\, with a touch of Jim Carrol….Brutally honest and laugh-out-loud f
unny\, Kasher…finds humor in even the most horrifying situations.â€
October 6\, 2026: 107 Days by Kamala Harris (memoir)Hopefully by Oct
ober the miles-long hold list for this book will have settled down enough
for you to get a copy! “For the first time\, and with surprising and
revealing insights\, Kamala Harris tells the story of one of the wildest a
nd most consequential presidential campaigns in American history.” (N
PR) November 3\, 2026: The Giveaway: The Clay Blackburn Story by Owen Hi
ll (crime fiction)We have something noir-ish by an Oakland author for tho
se long November nights. “Hill’s crime fiction is whip-smart\, s
tylish\, subversive\, hilarious and just dripping with East Bay color\, cu
lture and landmarks. Sweet and sour like a perfect Negroni\, Hill has inve
nted a new kind of East Bay Noir — the fog rolls in late\, the golden
afternoon glow somehow both luxurious and ominous in the class war that n
ever sleeps.” (Recommendation from Tally Ho! Books via Oaklandside)
December 1\, 2026: Sign My Name to Freedom by Betty Reid Soskin (memoir
)Reid Soskin\, famous for being the oldest park ranger in the history of t
he National Park Service while working at the Rosie the Riveter National P
ark in Richmond\, has been witness to a wide sweep of American history. Sh
e grew up in the Bay Area\, raised four kids\, ran a record store in Berke
ley and more. “Betty just turned 104 and her memoir gives a fascinati
ng look at African Americans migration\, the Rosie the Riveter story\, and
beyond through the Civil Rights era.” (recommender) (Ebook and aud
iobook listed separately) « See our 2025 books here »« See our 2
