Howard Wiley brings his hard-driving blend of soul-jazz, funk, gospel, and R&B to Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio, mixing West Coast-flavored originals with a funkified selection of classics. A Berkeley native who first found his musical footing in the church, Wiley has been a standout on the Bay Area scene since his teens and has grown into what DownBeat calls “a representative of the next generation” of jazz. Expect the kind of explosive, joyful bandstand presence that leaves audiences smiling — jazz as a living, breathing populist art form, rooted in blues, hip-hop, and gospel, and always reaching forward.
