Join us at Books Inc. Alameda as we present the amazing Terry Winckler, reading and signing copies of his new adventure, Afloat in Emerald City: Our Dream to Sail the World.Love of water led two questing souls to their biggest life dream — sailing the world with a family they would create as they built a vessel to take them away. Away from a place that he, a newspaper editor, had long fantasized as the Emerald City until he arrived and found it full of acidic realities. Then, she arrived, bringing joy to him and a newsroom that had forgotten how to laugh. Soon, they were laughing together on The Boat With No Name in the greatest neighborhood they ever knew: a marina full of drunks, drug users, prostitutes, and dreamers who one-by-one streaked to the far horizon until… it was their turn. But, could their relationship survive how radically the dream had changed? Terry Winckler is an award-winning journalist who has led two newspapers as executive editor, worked as a volunteer in a Mayan village, covered Guatemala’s civil war as a reporter, and hitchhiked to the U.S. through Mexico along the migrant trail. He currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Winckler's memoir, "Tule Town: A Memoir of Hellraising Redemption," is a testament to his diverse experiences and insights into the lives of ordinary people in a small California town. His next book "A Voice Came Down The Mountain" is a compelling narrative that intertwines personal history with the broader context of Guatemala's civil war and the impact of guerrilla fighters. The book is a blend of memoir, journalism, and history, offering readers a deep understanding of the Maya world and the role of U.S. policies in the migrant crisis. Winckler's journey through Guatemala's revolutionary period is both poignant and instructive, making it a significant contribution to the understanding of these critical times. His work has been recognized with numerous awards in newswriting, photography, and for his contributions to nonprofit organizations. Please join us!
