Join us in an exploration of the Mayan Haab calendar. Learn about its months and compare it to our calendar today, including the seasons and the holidays or traditions that mark special times in our life. Then create and decorate your own calendar to take home.

August 7th - Sun and Stone - Mayan Pyramids and the Solstice Explore how the Maya studied the sun and stars to track time. Learn how places like Chichen Itza were built to mark the solstices - the longest and shortest days of the year. Then design and build your own model that uses light and shadow to show a special day in the sky.

The César E. Chávez Branch is part of the Oakland Public Library system in the Fruitvale neighborhood, inside the Fruitvale Transit Village near the BART station. The space is straightforward and busy, with a typical mix of families, teens, and older patrons throughout the afternoon.
