Bottom of the Hill

1233 17th St, San Francisco, CA 94107

Bottom of the Hill is a small, no-frills rock club in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, tucked along 17th Street near the industrial edge of the city. Most of the room is standing space facing a low stage, with a simple bar along one side and a few places to sit or lean if someone wants a break from the crowd. Sound is loud and direct, and sightlines are straightforward because of the compact layout.

The place feels like a neighborhood spot that happens to host touring bands, so it is common to see regulars mixing with people who came in from other parts of the Bay.

Shows run most nights, with doors typically around 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening and music starting about an hour and a half later, depending on the lineup. Many nights are 21 and over, but some events are all ages, like the LSD and the Search for God hometown show that is billed as all ages with doors at 7:00 pm and music at 8:30 pm. Tickets are generally in the $20 to $40 range, based on the bill, with recent listings like Young Fresh Fellows with The Rubinoos at around $25 plus fees and Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol with American Sharks at $20 in advance and a few dollars more at the door. There is a kitchen that stays open well into the night for basic bar food and a small back patio where people step outside between sets.

The club sits at the bottom of Potrero Hill in a two-story Edwardian building that dates back to 1911, and it has operated as Bottom of the Hill since 1991. Over the years it has built a calendar that leans heavily on indie, punk, garage, and other guitar-focused bands, often with mixed local and touring lineups. The owners have announced that the venue plans to close at the end of 2026 after about 35 years of shows, so anyone going now is catching it in its final stretch as a working neighborhood rock room.
