The Function is a small two-level comedy club and cocktail lounge in the Mid-Market / Hayes Valley area, a short walk from Civic Center and Van Ness transit. The main room is a long, narrow space with a brick-backed stage at one end, rows of cozy seating, and a full bar along the side. Expect a standard nightclub check-in at the door, assigned or host-directed seating, and table service for drinks during the show.

Happy hour runs on weeknights in the early evening, and many events encourage bringing your own food or ordering in from nearby spots.

Comedy is the focus here, with stand-up shows scheduled most nights of the week and occasional themed events like Oscars watch parties, holiday festivals, and regular runs such as “Rush Hour Comedy Night” blocks on Friday evenings. Shows typically run around an hour to an hour and a half with several comics on each lineup. The crowd tends to be mixed in age but adult, and events are generally 21-plus because of the bar. Sound and lighting are set up for a proper club show, so it feels more like a dedicated comedy room than a restaurant with a stage.

There is also an upstairs lounge that functions as a more private loft area with couch seating and its own AV setup, often used for smaller groups or buyouts. The full venue is roughly 1,300 square feet and can be rented for private events on one or both floors. The Function opened in 2024 as a Black-owned comedy club and cocktail lounge and has since been used regularly for local festivals, pop-up series, and special one-off shows.
