Oakland Public Children’s Library is the children’s area inside the Main Library in downtown Oakland, between the office core and Lake Merritt. Visitors usually come in through the Oak Street side, where there is a ramp and power-assisted doors, then head to a separate Children’s Room with kid-height shelves, big floor spaces, and a mix of books and toys.

It can be busy on weekday mornings and weekends, with strollers parked along the walls and lots of families moving in and out.

For events, Toddler Storytime runs on Monday mornings at 10:30, with songs, active rhymes, and short stories aimed at kids roughly 18 months to 3 years. Caregivers are expected to stay, and there is often open play afterward with age-appropriate toys. Family Storytime, usually on Saturday mornings around 10:30, is looser on age and brings in older siblings along with babies, with a blend of books, songs, and movement followed by playtime. The Bananas playgroup meets on the fourth Friday of the month around midday in the community room, giving kids space to play, do simple art, and enjoy music while caregivers get parenting ideas and a chance to talk.

Facilities include all-gender restrooms, public computers, printers, and a reservable meeting room used for larger family programs. The building is multi-story with an elevator, and there are accessible bathrooms, water fountains, and self-check stations. Parking is a mix of free and metered street spots plus nearby garages, and finding a space can take a bit of circling during busy downtown hours. The Children’s Room recently reopened after a remodel and is part of a Main Library that has been serving Oakland for about 75 years, so the feel is an older civic building with updated children’s furniture and play areas.
