Temescal Branch is the neighborhood library for the Telegraph and 52nd area of Oakland’s Temescal district. It is a multi story building with an entrance on Telegraph and an elevator that connects to the lower level. Inside, expect a compact but busy space with popular books in English, a good-sized children’s area, and smaller language collections for kids and adults, including Spanish, Tigrinya, and Amharic.

There are a handful of public computers with internet access, basic printing and copying, and self-service checkout. Regular programs include things like Baby Bounce for pre-walkers, Family Storytime for all ages, and Read to a Dog sessions where kids can practice reading aloud with trained therapy dogs.

Events for families usually happen upstairs in the main children’s area or in the community meeting room, depending on size. For storytimes, stroller parking is set up in the downstairs meeting room, which keeps the upstairs area less crowded. The layout is straightforward, and staff direct people to where they need to go for programs. Bathrooms are all gender and the building has accessible workstations, an accessible restroom, and an accessible drinking fountain. Parking is mostly on nearby streets, with a mix of short-term free spaces and a few meters on the side streets.

Downstairs, the branch has a reservable meeting room that holds around 45 people, with folding tables, chairs, and a small stage. The room is wheelchair accessible and is often used for community groups and small events. Behind the branch, the Oakland Tool Lending Library operates as a separate but closely connected service, where cardholders can borrow tools for home repair and projects. Temescal has been a branch of Oakland Public Library since 1899, and the current building has been in use since 1918, so visitors are using one of the older neighborhood library buildings in the city.
