The Regency Ballroom

1300 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94109

The Regency Ballroom is a mid-sized concert hall in SF’s Polk Gulch / Lower Nob Hill area, used regularly for touring acts booked by Goldenvoice. The room is basically a big rectangular floor with a built-in stage at one end and a horseshoe-shaped balcony wrapping around the sides and back. Most shows are general admission standing on the floor, with seated or standing spots up in the balcony.

There are bars on the main level and upstairs, and entry usually involves a straightforward security check and ID check for anyone buying drinks. Depending on the event, shows can be all ages or 18+, so it is worth checking the listing.

Inside, the space feels like an old ballroom that has been adjusted for concerts: blonde hardwood floors, high ceilings around 35 feet, and a grid of turn-of-the-century teardrop chandeliers overhead. Sightlines are generally clear from both the floor and balcony, since the room is open with no pillars cutting through the middle. A multi-million-dollar upgrade finished in early 2025 brought in a new sound system, extra lighting, and remodeled bathrooms, so production is modern even though the building is historic. Recent and upcoming calendars mix indie bands, electronic nights, and international R&B and pop, with shows like Anuv Jain, Clara La San, and VTSS giving a good sense of the range.

The building the ballroom sits in opened in 1909 as a Scottish Rite Masonic hall and is a mix of neoclassical and Beaux-Arts architecture. Over the past century it has been used as a Masonic temple, movie theater, banquet hall, and dance hall before settling into its current role as a 1,400-capacity live music venue. The ballroom is one of three main event spaces in the larger Regency complex, alongside the downstairs Social Hall SF and the Lodge upstairs, but for most concertgoers the focus is the main room with its balcony, chandeliers, and updated sound and climate control.
