Studio 23 Gallery

2309 Encinal Ave, Alameda, CA 94501

Studio 23 Gallery is a small, informal art space tucked in the back lot at the corner of Encinal and Oak in downtown Alameda, just off Park Street. Visitors enter through a driveway into a low-key converted space that feels more like a working studio than a polished museum. The gallery usually opens for specific shows, Second Friday art walks in the evening, and scheduled workshops, so people coming for an event can expect it to be active only when something is on the calendar.

Events here tend to be community oriented and collaborative. Group shows like the Art of the African Diaspora satellite exhibition fill the walls with work from multiple artists, and receptions are straightforward evening gatherings where people walk the space, talk with artists, and grab simple refreshments, sometimes from local spots like Julie’s. Other days the gallery hosts hands-on meetups such as the “Alameda Artists Make Art” sessions, where visitors bring their own supplies, spread out at tables inside or just outside the gallery, and casually work on painting, sketching, or ink while people drift in and out.

Studio 23 started in 2013 as an independent art studio and community gallery run by local artists Wesley and Jessica Warren and has stayed focused on local makers and neighborhood events since then. It now functions as the public gallery space for the nonprofit ArtPush.org, so many of the shows and workshops tie into broader community art projects and recurring themed exhibits. People heading here for an opening, meetup, or special show can expect a modest, DIY space, a mix of regulars and newcomers from the Alameda arts scene, and programming that usually centers on local and regional artists rather than traveling blockbuster shows.
