For a country so steeped in winemaking tradition, Austria always seems to sit in the shadow of its neighbors. Austrian wine carries less prestige than its German counterparts to the west; it doesn't carry the same sense of discovery as its neighbors to the east (Slovenia, Hungary, etc.). But Austria is arguably one of the most compelling wine regions in the world, sitting at the crossroads of Germanic, Slavic, Hungarian, Italian, and Balkan cultures.
While Germany's wine identity developed largely within the Roman Empire and later German states, Austria spent centuries as the heart of the Habsburg Empire, whose territory stretched from northern Italy to Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and parts of modern Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. Those connections profoundly shaped what Austrians planted, how they farmed, and what they drank.
That vastly diverse set of influences still shapes Austria's modern winemaking today. A new generation is keenly focused on reflecting tradition through a modern lens. And who better than our good friends at Danch & Granger to bring in the best of that new generation! Brian Stapleton will be back at the bar pouring new arrivals from Austria's most compelling producers, representing everything from nervy, racy whites to brooding, herb-spiked reds.

Vintage Berkeley on Vine Street is a small neighborhood wine shop in North Berkeley, a short walk from the cluster of restaurants and cafes often called the Gourmet Ghetto. The space is compact and straightforward, with shelves of bottles organized by region and style and a small counter where staff talk through picks or pour tastes during events. It feels more like a serious retail shop than a bar, though there is room to stand around high tables or the counter for tasting flights during scheduled happenings. more...
