The Freight

Most nights you can expect doors to open about an hour before showtime, with a mellow line forming along Addison. There is a parking garage next door, and the venue is set up to be wheelchair accessible, with reserved accessible seating options.

Shows tend to be focused on people who came to actually listen, so crowds are usually attentive and on the quieter side once the music starts. The calendar leans toward roots and acoustic styles, but ranges pretty widely. A typical month might include country rock veterans like Pure Prairie League, guitar-heavy roots bands such as the Bill Kirchen Band, and darker experimental pop from artists like Zola Jesus, plus jazz and global music acts. Most events are all ages, though the vibe skews adult, and you will see everything from longtime regulars to students who walked over from campus. There is usually a small bar and concessions area for basic drinks and snacks rather than a full restaurant setup.

Historically the place goes back to 1968, when it started as Freight & Salvage, a small coffeehouse that grew up with Berkeley’s folk and bluegrass scene. It later incorporated as the Berkeley Society for the Preservation of Traditional Music and moved into the current purpose-built hall in the Berkeley Arts District in 2009. The organization now operates under the shorter name The Freight, but it still runs as a community-focused nonprofit with a steady mix of concerts, workshops, and special events.
