What spiritual traditions survived against all odds — and how are they still practiced today? In this immersive workshop and lecture, participants will be introduced to key tenets of Indigenous West African spirituality and the spiritual technologies that endured through enslavement, becoming powerful tools of protection, healing, luck, and resilience for Black communities across the African Diaspora.Centering on Hoodoo, this class explores both the historical roots and lived, physical practices of African American spirituality — honoring the ancestral wisdom that carried these traditions across centuries and continents. Participants will learn how specific herbs are used for healing, why certain stones hold spiritual power, and how everyday objects can become vessels of focused intention. The gathering culminates in a hands-on ritual where each participant will create their own Mojo Bag — a living talisman crafted by hand, informed by tradition, and charged with personal purpose.About the Facilitator Amber Nash holds a Master of Theological Studies from The Graduate Theological Union, where she studied West African religion and culture during Western colonization. During her academic work, she discovered the rich tradition of African American folk magic, and she has been practicing Hoodoo and ancestor veneration for over a decade. Her teaching weaves scholarly grounding with lived spiritual practice, offering participants both historical context and embodied tradition. This class offers both education and embodiment, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation for African American spiritual traditions and a tangible piece of ancestral practice to carry forward.Beginner-friendly. All materials provided. Open to those seeking historical understanding, spiritual connection, and intentional craft.
