The Black Studies Collective Community Reading and Discussion Series

This event is over, it happened on

July 7, 2026 at West Oakland Job Resource Center in Oakland, CA

1801 Adeline St 2nd floor room 211, Oakland, CA 94607, USA

The West Oakland Branch Library is excited to announce that the Black Studies Collective is back!

This series invites community members to reflect on how the ideas and traditions of Black Studies continue to shape our communities, histories, and everyday lives. For our second cohort, we’re reading The Black Antifascist Tradition: Fighting Back From Anti-Lynching to Abolition by Jeanelle K. Hope and Bill Mullen.

Registration is open. Interested participants can sign up in person or by calling the branch. The Orientation will take place on Tuesday, June 2, 6-7:15 PM. The four-part discussion series will then continue on the first Tuesday of each month, July through October 2026, from 6:00–7:15 PM.

The first section of readings will be distributed at orientation for discussion in July. In July, a limited number of books will be available for distribution, and anyone who has their own copy is welcome to join (you still need to register). Because this is a small, discussion-based group that builds on itself, participants are encouraged to attend at least 3 of the 4 sessions.

Join us as we continue West Oakland’s legacy of collective learning and cultural engagement, celebrating the ongoing importance of Black Studies as a living, community-centered tradition.

West Oakland Job Resource Center sits in the middle of West Oakland’s neighborhood activity, in the same building as the West Oakland Branch Library across from DeFremery Park. The job center offices are on the second floor, in room 211, so visitors coming for an event should plan on going upstairs rather than into a storefront space. The feel is practical and work focused, with standard office and training rooms used for orientations, classes and one on one meetings. more...
