Fox Theater is a historic concert hall in Oakland’s Uptown district, a short walk from the 19th St/Oakland BART station. The room is mid‑sized, holding around 2,800 people, so shows feel large but still contained. Most touring acts use it as a stop for full-production concerts, from shred-heavy lineups like SatchVai Band featuring Joe Satriani and Steve Vai with Animals As Leaders to more stripped-down nights such as Gillian Welch & David Rawlings performing their Grateful Dead Acoustic Reckoning sets.

On show nights the blocks around Telegraph and Broadway are busy with people heading to nearby bars and restaurants, rideshares, and a mix of street activity typical of downtown.

Inside, the building feels like a restored movie palace, with a big main floor and two upper levels. The orchestra level is gently tiered and can be set up as a standing general admission floor or fully seated, depending on the event. The mezzanine and balcony above are always seated, with fixed rows that give a clear view of the stage, and the balcony wraps back far enough that you can choose between up-close or more distant vantage points. Bars and restrooms are spread across the lobbies, so most people figure out a routine pretty quickly once they have been there once or twice.

The theater opened in 1928 as a movie house and later went through a major renovation before reopening in 2009, with the city and Another Planet Entertainment involved in the restoration. The official site describes it as “an architectural masterpiece and former movie house,” which fits the ornate interior and restored details. The building also shares space with the Oakland School for the Arts in the adjoining wings, which adds to the steady foot traffic in the area even outside of show times.
