Regular events like the AAMLO Kids Club, which centers on storytelling and simple arts and crafts for children on first Saturdays, tend to use open rooms that can handle families coming and going without disturbing people who are there to read or do research. Author talks and panel-style programs, like the Nicole Carr book discussion, are generally held in a main meeting room with rows of chairs and basic AV, more like a community lecture space than an auditorium.

Most of the library side is non-circulating, so visitors who come for events see a lot of shelves and work tables but are expected to use materials on site. Staff at the reference desk are used to first-timers and can point out where to sit if an event brings a crowd. The galleries are modest in size and usually show history or culture exhibitions that people wander through before or after programs. The building itself is part of the experience. AAMLO is housed in the Charles S. Greene library, a 1902 Carnegie building that once served as Oakland’s main public library and later became home to the African American Museum and Library at Oakland in the early 2000s.
