Amelie San Francisco

1754 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109

Amelie is a French wine bar and bistro on Polk in the Nob Hill / Polk Gulch stretch, a busy block with a lot of small bars and restaurants. Inside it is compact and dim, with red bottle lighting, a long bar, and a mix of two-tops and small group tables that fill up fast in the evening. It can get loud when the room is full, so it is more of a social spot than a quiet one.

Expect table service at both the bar and the floor and a crowd that ranges from neighborhood regulars to people stopping in before or after dinner nearby.

The focus is wine, including customizable flights during the daily happy hour, along with a short list of cocktails and spirits. Food is built around cheese and charcuterie boards, thin flatbread style pizzas, and a handful of French bistro dishes and snacks. For live events, the space does regular music on weekends, with a DJ on Friday nights and live bands or small acoustic groups on Saturday and Sunday in the early evening. Recent calendars have included jazz groups, Latin jazz, and Spanish folk sets, so music is typically at the level of a bar show rather than a formal concert.

Amelie has been on Polk Street since 2006 and is part of a small group of sister locations in New York and Marin. The Nob Hill bar keeps fairly consistent hours in the afternoon and evening, with the kitchen usually closing a little before the bar. It is set up for walk ins, though reservations are an option for busier nights or larger groups, especially if planning to stay through a live music set.
