Berkeley City Club sits just off downtown Berkeley, close to the UC campus, in a big historic building that functions as both a hotel and a social club. Inside, it has a slightly old-fashioned feel, with high ceilings, quieter common areas, and a layout that can feel a bit like a maze the first time. Guests coming for events can expect staffed front desk check-in and a lobby that leads into lounges, meeting rooms, and hallways that branch off toward the bar, restaurant, and pool.

The place regularly hosts public and member-focused events, so seeing people heading to a talk, a reception, or a small performance is common.
Food and drink events show up often here. Tapas Thursday is set up as a casual evening drop-in with small plates and sangria over a longer time window, while Friday Flight focuses on three small pours of wine with cheese and preserves, more like a late afternoon tasting than a full night out. The Arts & Culture lecture series runs on a regular schedule, usually in a dedicated room with chairs set classroom-style, and tickets are modestly priced with a member discount. Those talks can draw a mix of club members, UC folks, and neighbors who walk over after work.
The building itself is part of the draw. It opened in 1930 as the Berkeley Women’s City Club and was designed by California architect Julia Morgan. The structure is now a protected historic landmark, with features like an indoor swimming pool, interior courtyards, and original architectural details that are still very visible as you move between event spaces.
