Bird & Beckett Books & Records
Bird & Beckett is a neighborhood book and record shop in San Francisco’s Glen Park that also functions as a small performance space. Shelves of new and used books and a modest vinyl selection frame a low platform at the back of the room where bands set up. For shows, staff pull out rows of folding chairs and people fill in around the stacks, so it feels more like a living room gathering than a club.

Capacity is limited, so expect a close, listening-style crowd rather than a bar scene, with the band just a few feet away.
Music programming leans heavily on jazz and related styles. A regular rotation of small combos comes through, including groups like Ray Skjelbred & the Hot Corner playing 1920s rooted Chicago style jazz, soul jazz outfits such as Eric & the In Crowd working classic Hammond B3 material, and high energy roots and rockabilly acts like Mitch Polzak & the Royal Deuces. The shop also hosts poetry readings, author events, and other literary nights under the same roof. Shows are typically ticketed or donation based, with a simple setup: chairs, a small sound system, and the counter nearby if someone wants to browse between sets.
The space sits a short walk from the Glen Park BART station, on the main commercial strip. Bird & Beckett opened in 1999 and moved to its current Chenery Street location in 2008, and many of the ongoing events are organized through the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project, a nonprofit set up in 2007 to support the store’s schedule of concerts and readings.
