The building itself is the historic Grand Theater in the Mission. It first opened in 1940 as a neighborhood movie house and is now a designated San Francisco landmark, with the restored vertical “GRAND” sign visible from Mission Street. Gray Area, a nonprofit focused on the intersection of technology and culture, moved into the theater in 2014 and retrofitted it with contemporary sound, lighting, and visual systems while keeping the basic single-screen-theater layout intact.
