Comstock Saloon

155 Columbus Ave, San Francisco, CA 94133

Comstock Saloon sits at the edge of North Beach, close to Chinatown and the Financial District, and functions as both a cocktail bar and a small live music room. The main space is a long, narrow bar with an old wooden counter, a brass rail, and small tables along the wall. Lighting is low but not dark, with big front windows looking out onto the Columbus traffic.

Most nights feel busy but not chaotic, with a mix of neighborhood regulars, service industry folks getting off work, and visitors who wandered in from nearby restaurants.

Live jazz is a regular thing here, generally in the 8 pm to 11 pm range. Tuesdays are anchored by the Hal Bigler Band, playing material that fits the old-time setting. Wednesdays the Peninsula Project brings a more jumpy, high-energy swing feel. Fridays often feature Gaucho, which leans into gypsy jazz, New Orleans swing, and older American styles. The bands play in the main room, so anyone attending an event should expect to share space with regular bar traffic, clinking glassware, and people ordering food and drinks. Seating is mostly small tables and bar stools, so early arrival helps if sitting near the music is important.

The bar focuses on classic cocktails, whiskey, and a short but solid food menu, with kitchen hours that generally run into the late evening. It keeps a simple schedule during the week, opening in the late afternoon and running until midnight, with earlier opening on Fridays for a long-standing free lunch tradition. The building itself has been a drinking spot since 1907, rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and later restored in 2010 to highlight its history as one of the old saloons on the edge of the Barbary Coast.
