Dictee Art & Exhibition is a small gallery space in Oakland’s Bella Vista / Clinton area, inside the New Village Oakland building on 11th Avenue. The main room is simple and light, with clean walls, wood floors, and enough room to move around between works without feeling packed in. Large doors open onto a front deck and a California habitat garden, so events often spill outside.

The outdoor area has gravel paths, tables, and informal seating surrounded by native plants, and it works as extra space to talk, take breaks, or step away from a busy program.

For events, the gallery is set up to handle both exhibitions and hands-on workshops. Shows tend to feature local and Bay Area artists working in painting, sculpture, ceramics, and design, and the scale is manageable enough that a full visit does not take all afternoon. Workshops like the “Collaborative Art with Sonja Hinrichsen” sessions use the open floor to create large drawings together on paper laid across the gallery, so visitors should expect to be on their feet and moving around rather than just watching. Basic amenities like restrooms and a small kitchen area are on site, and there is direct access between the indoor gallery, the deck, and the garden.

Dictee is a relatively new space, with its first official exhibition, “Intimate Nature,” opening in July 2025 and running into late August that year. It continues to show work by artists with ties to the Bay Area and to host community events connected to New Village Oakland. The vibe is low-key and neighborhood oriented, and most public programs are focused on giving visitors a close look at the artwork and a chance to talk directly with artists and organizers.
