691 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94105

Local Edition sits below street level in downtown San Francisco, under the Hearst building near Market and Third. Entry is off Market through a discreet doorway marked by a large clock, then down a set of stairs to a low-lit room. Inside, it is a sizable lounge-style cocktail bar with a long central bar, plenty of two-top tables, and clusters of booths along the walls.

The lighting is dim, music-forward, and conversation volume can get high on busy nights. Table service is common, though many people just stand or sit near the bar. Reservations are often used for seated groups, especially later in the week.

The venue regularly books live music, with a focus on jazz and related styles. The Local Edition Jazz Orchestra holds a recurring Tuesday night slot, and other acts like Le Jazz Hot Quartet and Wobbly World rotate through on different evenings. There is a dedicated stage, and on band nights the front part of the room feels more like a small club, with people facing the music and some open space near the stage that can turn into a casual dance area. On non-band nights it functions more as a cocktail lounge, with recorded music and a slower pace.

The whole place leans into the building’s newspaper past. Decor includes vintage printing equipment, typewriters, and framed clippings tied to San Francisco papers from the mid 20th century. The bar occupies what used to be a printing room for the Examiner in the Hearst building, and the concept is built around the city’s 1950s and 60s newspaper scene, which shapes both the look of the room and the drink names.
