For events like AI meetups, talks, or panels, expect check-in tables set up near the lobby or on one of the lower floors, with staff directing people to the right auditorium, forum space, or gallery.

The museum mixes paid galleries with a lot of “free to roam” public space on the lower levels, so it is common to see a blend of regular museum visitors and people just meeting for coffee. Jane on Third on the ground floor and Steps Coffee on Floor 2 handle most of the casual food and drink, and there is another cafe up in the sculpture garden area. Seating ranges from lobby steps to cafe tables, which makes it easy to hang out before or after an event. During family programs and workshops like MAKE! with SCRAP, the education and studio areas are active with kids and caregivers, while more formal evenings, like the Architecture x Architecture conversations, tend to cluster around the theater or designated lecture spaces.

The current building is the result of a major expansion that opened to the public on May 14, 2016, designed with Snøhetta to nearly triple the museum’s exhibition space and add outdoor terraces. The museum now spreads art over seven gallery floors and includes more than 45,000 square feet of free public space, so even event-focused visits usually involve moving through a lot of art and open common areas on the way in and out.
