Oakland Photo Workshop is a street-level photography gallery and workspace in the historic Asian Resource Center building in Oakland’s Chinatown. The space is used by the East Bay Photo Collective for rotating exhibitions and public programs, so what is on the walls changes regularly. Recent shows have focused on the work of the collective’s own teaching artists, documentary-style views of people at work around the East Bay, and changing landscapes along the hills of the Central Valley.

Hours are limited to a few afternoons from Friday through Sunday, so visitors usually come during a specific event, opening, or class.

The gallery is set among small shops and restaurants in Chinatown, with activity on the sidewalks most of the day. Both 12th Street and Lake Merritt BART stations are within walking distance, and several AC Transit lines stop nearby. Parking in the immediate area is tight, especially on weekends, so most people either use a nearby garage or transit. Inside, the focus is on photography rather than amenities. Events tend to be straightforward: exhibition receptions, artist talks, and presentations tied to the workshops program.

Outside of gallery hours, Oakland Photo Workshop functions as a hub for the East Bay Photo Collective’s classes and meetups, including digital photography, darkroom, and alternative process workshops. The space is part of a larger nonprofit that has been running photography programs around Oakland since the late 2010s. The gallery itself opened in 2021 as the collective’s dedicated home for exhibitions and community events, and most shows highlight photographers with ties to the Bay Area and the wider East Bay photo community.
