Brookfield Branch is a small neighborhood library in East Oakland’s Brookfield area, next to Ira Jinkins Park and sharing a building with the East Oakland Senior Center. It is a single-story space with automatic doors, all-gender single-user restrooms, and a free parking lot with accessible spaces. Inside, there are open shelves of books in English and Spanish, a kids’ corner, a few quiet tables, and nine public computers with internet, Microsoft Office, printing, and a scanner.

The building is fully air-conditioned, which makes it a practical place to sit and read or get work done on hot days.

Events like Play Cafe usually happen in the children’s area, where there is room for floor time, strollers, and toys. Families with young kids can expect simple storytimes with songs, space to move around, and snacks set out for children and caregivers. Other programs skew toward hands-on activities for kids and teens, with occasional workshops and drop-in events for adults. The branch layout is straightforward, so it is easy to find staff at the front desk, the computers along one side, and the restrooms off the main room.

Brookfield has been part of the Oakland Public Library system for decades and has operated at its current location since the early 1990s. In 2025 and 2026 the branch went through a major renovation that upgraded the electrical system, replaced flooring and lighting, and improved accessibility throughout the building. The branch reopened in late August 2026 with refreshed interiors, updated restrooms, more accessible parking, and other small details that make it feel like a newer, more functional version of the same neighborhood library regulars were used to before the closure.
