The Great Crucolo Parade
SLATE CONTEMPORARY GALLERY is a small contemporary art space in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, on the main College Avenue strip near shops and restaurants. The gallery has a clean, straightforward layout, with one primary exhibition area that is easy to take in during a short visit. Lighting is focused on the work, and there is usually a single show installed at a time, so visitors can move through without feeling crowded or rushed.

Programming leans toward current painting and mixed media. Recent and upcoming shows include “GESTURAL EXPRESSIONS,” which gathers five painters working in gestural abstraction, and “Jen Garrido: (UN)TETHERED,” a solo exhibition built around a new body of abstract work. The gallery also shows photography, sculpture, and other contemporary work linked to its roster of artists, and occasionally coordinates with a separate viewing room location in another part of Oakland for inventory and private appointments. For public events like opening receptions and artist talks, expect a relaxed crowd, minimal formalities, and staff who are used to walking visitors through the show. Regular hours are concentrated in the daytime and early evening, Tuesday through Saturday.
SLATE CONTEMPORARY GALLERY is part of SLATE Art, which also runs an art consulting arm that places work in homes, offices, and other sites around the Bay Area and beyond. The gallery was founded in 2009 by art historian and curator Danielle Fox and continues to focus on exhibitions that highlight artists from its ongoing roster.
