Rockridge Improvement Club is a neighborhood bar in Oakland’s Rockridge district, right on the College Avenue strip near Rockridge BART. It is set up as a relaxed hangout rather than a formal venue, with a long bar, couches, and clusters of tables where people camp out for trivia, karaoke, or board and card games. The space includes arcade-style options like skee-ball, air hockey, and other video games, and there are regulars who treat it like their go-to “adult arcade” spot.

Weeknights often center on specific activities, so it can feel more like a community living room than a nightclub.

Programming is busy but straightforward. Trivia runs every Wednesday at 7:30 pm and tends to fill the front of the room. Thursdays feature a drag show, Fridays and Sundays focus on karaoke, and Saturday nights usually have DJs starting later in the evening. The bar also slots in one-off events, from live band tributes such as a Grateful Dead cover night to themed performances like “Reservoir Dads.” Most events are casual and walk-up friendly, with people drifting between the bar, the games, and the main floor.

The building has been a community hub for more than a century. It started out in the early 1900s as the Vernon-Rockridge Improvement Club, a neighborhood civic hall that helped shape the surrounding streets and services. The bar keeps the old name and uses the multi-level layout of the historic structure, with some tucked-away rooms and a downstairs area that now holds things like a photo booth instead of committee meetings.
