The Locals
Werkshack is a shared workspace and gallery in Uptown Oakland that combines artist studios with a small retail area. The space is used by a tight group of resident makers along with rotating exhibitions, so depending on when someone visits, the mix of work on the walls and in the cases can be pretty different. On a typical event night, visitors can expect a casual flow of people walking through studios, chatting with artists, and looking at finished pieces alongside works in progress.

Events here tend to center on local art and craft rather than big productions. During First Friday Art Walk and Oakland Art Murmur nights, the place usually feels busy, with multiple studios open and a range of media on view. National Craft Open Studios Weekend and similar events bring in craft-focused visitors, with residents showing textiles, metal jewelry, leatherwork, glass, printmaking, papermaking, painting, fabric art, and botanicals. Student-focused shows, like the Society of Artists and Makers exhibitions, add another layer, with work from community college art programs sharing space with more established makers.
Regular public hours are limited. The gallery is open on Saturdays in the afternoon and on First Fridays in the evening, with most other visits arranged by appointment. Werkshack operates as a nonprofit arts organization, which shapes how the space is used, with an emphasis on ongoing access to studios, low-key exhibitions, and community-oriented events rather than a commercial gallery schedule.
