About the Author: 

Nicole Carr is an award-winning investigative journalist, essayist, professor, and speaker based in Atlanta, Georgia. Her reporting focuses on the intersections of race, policy, education, and democracy, with a particular emphasis on how systems of power shape the lives of communities often left unheard. Carr’s investigative work has appeared in national outlets including ProPublica, where she examined issues ranging from public education and political influence to organized campaigns targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Her reporting has received national recognition, including a Sidney Award and honors from the American

Society of Journalists and Authors. Her essay “The Black Press Democratized America” won first place in the ASJA Opinion/Op-Ed category. Before joining ProPublica, Carr spent more than a decade as a television reporter across the South, including at WSB-TV in Atlanta, where she earned four regional Emmy Awards for her investigative and live reporting.

Carr is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Journalism at Morehouse College and frequently collaborates with Howard University’s Center for Journalism and Democracy. She is also active in several professional journalism organizations,including the National Association of Black Journalists and the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Her debut book, The Price of Exclusion: The Pursuit of Healthcare in a Segregated Nation, is an ancestral journey that explores the legacy of Black physicians and healthcare inequality.
