We all want the children in our lives to be healthy and happy, but sometimes our well-intentioned words can cause unintended harm. You are invited to a special event with adolescent medicine specialist Dr. Lauren Hartman and leading weight stigma expert and author Virgie Tovar, as they discuss a compassionate, evidence-based approach to weight and wellness.
Drawing on Dr. Hartman’s extensive clinical experience and Tovar’s lived experience and expertise, this conversation explores how we can move away from "shame and scales" toward a culture of belonging. Based on the insights from Dr. Hartman’s new book, Freeing Children and Young Adults from Shame, Scales, and Stigma – for which Tovar wrote the foreword – they will discuss how to foster environments that empower the next generation to live without the weight of stigma.

Local Economy is a small, flexible community space on the College Avenue stretch of Rockridge, a few doors from East Bay Booksellers. It looks and feels like a bright neighborhood storefront set up for people to gather rather than a traditional venue. Inside, most things are organized around a long central table where talks, workshops, book clubs and game sessions all happen in close quarters. more...
