Lea Redmond writes: "When I am dreaming up a gift for someone, I don’t assume it will come from a store. Indeed, many of the most wonderful phenomena are too big or too small—too fleeting or too slow, too alive or too wild—to pin down, package up, and sell. A great gift might be borrowed instead of bought. It could merely be pointed at, wandered through, or gazed into. It might be hiding up in the night sky or a grandmother’s attic. I believe we can call industrial capitalism’s bluff even while participating in monetary exchange, reining in consumerism-run-amok and the way it eclipses the world’s true offerings."
Join Redmond, author of This Is for You - Gift-giving as a Way of Life, for a presentation and mini workshop that shifts gift-giving away from being each other's personal shoppers (so boring!) to giving and receiving creative gestures of care that mean the world to each other. Optional: bring a gift you've received -- wonderful or terrible! -- and share its story. Books -- illustrated by the author -- will be available for purchase.

Local Economy is a small, flexible community space on the College Avenue stretch of Rockridge, a few doors from East Bay Booksellers. It looks and feels like a bright neighborhood storefront set up for people to gather rather than a traditional venue.
