Gilman Brewing Company sits in West Berkeley’s Gilman District, in a light industrial pocket that has filled in with breweries, wineries, and food spots. The taproom is in a converted auto shop, so the space is open and a little warehouse-like, with concrete floors, high ceilings, and a mix of long communal tables and smaller setups. There is a front patio along the street where people tend to spread out during daytime events, and it is usually the spillover zone when bands or fairs are going on.

Inside, the focus is on their own beer, with a rotating list that usually covers a range from hoppy IPAs to saisons and a few experimental one-offs. Food is handled in-house most days, with Detroit style pizzas, wings, and other bar standards, but larger events will sometimes bring in food trucks that park nearby. The place handles a wide variety of gatherings: daytime craft fairs with dozens of vendors and rescue dog adoptions, multi band punk bills that run into the evening, and stand up comedy nights with a small stage area set up near the front. It also hosts more laid back, age specific music nights, like R&B events tailored to a 55+ crowd that take over the taproom on weekend evenings.

Gilman Brewing opened in 2015 and was started by two veterinary orthopedic surgeons and a musician friend who turned the old auto shop into a production brewery and taproom. It is right next door to the long running all ages punk venue 924 Gilman, so on show nights there is often a mix of concert goers using the brewery as a pre or post show stop, mixed in with regulars from the neighborhood and people coming in specifically for ticketed events.
