GearBox Gallery

770 W Grand Ave Suite B, Oakland, CA 94612

GearBox Gallery is a small, street-level art space in West Oakland, in the same building as Transmission Gallery. It is an artist-run spot, so the people showing work are also the ones staffing the desk and handling the details. Regular hours are Thursday through Saturday afternoons, with added evening hours on First Fridays, which makes it easy to pair a visit with the Oakland Art Murmur art walk.

Expect a straightforward white-wall gallery layout, decent natural light, and a calm feel even when there is foot traffic from nearby events.

Most visits center on a single featured exhibition in the main room, like the “ATMOSPHERIC” show or other two-artist pairings and solo projects such as “Three Girls.” Alongside that, there is often work by member artists on view, plus the Inner Room, a smaller project space that hosts installations or focused solo shows. The gallery leans into regional contemporary work, and it regularly schedules artist talks, opening receptions, and juried group shows, so there is a good chance of catching the artists in person if you come during a listed event time.

GearBox is part of Oakland Art Murmur and participates in the First Friday Art Walks, so the area around it can feel lively on those evenings with people moving between nearby galleries. The gallery was founded in 2015 by a group of artists connected to Gallery 621 in Benicia, and it has kept that cooperative structure, with member artists involved in curation and operations. Over time it has built a steady rhythm of member shows, guest-artist features, and an annual juried exhibition that brings in a wider mix of Northern California artists.
