Transmission Gallery Oakland

770 W Grand Ave Suite A, Oakland, CA 94612

Transmission Gallery is a small contemporary art space on the second floor of a building along West Grand in Oakland, in the stretch of galleries tied into the Oakland Art Murmur scene. Visitors enter from street level and head up a flight of stairs to the gallery. The space is straightforward and focused on the work on the walls and in the showroom, with a mix of paintings, sculpture and mixed media that tends to lean toward figurative and concept driven pieces.

It shares the building with GearBox Gallery below, so it is easy to see more than one show in a single visit.

Regular hours are limited to Thursday through Saturday, usually 12 to 5 pm, with visits outside that window handled by appointment. During receptions, like the ones scheduled for Frank Cole’s “The House Inside” and Kristie Hansen’s “Alternation,” the gallery is open in the afternoon, typically 1 to 4 pm, with light refreshments and time to talk directly with the artists or the gallery staff. Street parking along West Grand and nearby residential blocks is the norm, and the area is active with other arts spaces and small businesses, especially on event days.

The programming focuses on contemporary work by regional and national artists, with a particular attention to figurative art and related movements such as California Funk and various strains of expressionism and socially engaged practice. Transmission Gallery has been operating in Oakland since 2012, so the calendar usually reflects a steady rotation of solo and small group exhibitions, plus occasional artist talks tied to specific shows.
