Oakland Public Library: Rockridge Branch

5366 College Ave, Oakland, CA 94618

Rockridge Branch sits on College Avenue in the middle of Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, a short walk from Rockridge BART and the rest of the College Avenue shops and cafés. It is a multi-story branch with an elevator and automatic doors at the main entrance, so getting in and around the building is straightforward for strollers and wheelchairs. Inside, the branch is compact but busy, with a standard mix of adult, teen, and children’s sections.

There are 12 public computers with internet and printing, plus a scanner and self-service checkout machines. All gender bathrooms and accessible water fountains are available. The upstairs meeting room is used a lot for events and can be split into two sides, each with rolling tables and chairs; one side has a small sink and the other has a projection screen and whiteboard. There is also a small Zenbooth style study room that can be reserved for quiet work. Only parts of the building are air-conditioned, mainly the meeting room and teen area, so temperatures can vary a bit depending on where you sit.

Programming is pretty steady here. Drop-In Computer Help usually happens in the computer area, with volunteers helping people set up email, work on resumes, or search for jobs during their computer time. Family Storytime is a weekly thing, generally upstairs in the meeting room, but it sometimes shifts to the staff parking lot behind the building when it is held outdoors. Children of all ages show up, though the stories and songs are aimed at toddlers and preschoolers. The library describes itself simply: “Rockridge Branch has popular books in English,” which fits what you actually see on the shelves during a typical visit.
