Local Economy

6028 College Ave, Oakland, CA 94618

Local Economy is a small, flexible community space on the College Avenue stretch of Rockridge, a few doors from East Bay Booksellers. It looks and feels like a bright neighborhood storefront set up for people to gather rather than a traditional venue. Inside, most things are organized around a long central table where talks, workshops, book clubs and game sessions all happen in close quarters.

There is usually coffee service from Painted Leopard, and a small area with goods from independent makers, so it often resembles a low-key café and shop between scheduled events.

Events tend to be intimate and pretty hands-on. A kids-focused afternoon like the Illustoria magazine gathering will feel different from an evening demo of a music app or a discussion-heavy book club, but they are all built around people sitting together, listening and talking. Expect simple seating, minimal separation between presenters and attendees, and a crowd that often includes neighborhood regulars. Because of the size of the room, many events cap attendance and may ask for RSVP in advance.

During the day, Local Economy operates on a membership model, with members using the space as a shared hangout or work spot during open hours from Wednesday through Saturday. It began operating in October 2025, set up by longtime Oakland residents as what they describe as a kind of community resilience hub, so most programming and policies are geared toward repeat local use rather than one-off shows. Visitors coming for a specific event can expect a low-frills, neighborly setting in a walkable Rockridge commercial strip with plenty of spots nearby to grab food before or after.
